  1. Dear Derek,

hope I’ve got through to the right person!!

I’m a Police officer for West Mercia and am involved in biker education at events and meetings. I’m part of the Shropshire Motorcycle Road Safety Group which consists of West Mercia Police, Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service, Shropshire Council and West Mercia Safer Roads Partnership. I attend events and shows throughout Shropshire and bordering Counties with our display van, an ex ambulance, which contains a post collision R1, DVD & TV, table, literature and everything we need to put on a display to engage with bikers. We promote better riding through training and offer subsidised training to existing and new bikers. We work closely with RoSPA and IAM and this year, shall be partaking in over 40 events so far. We have a Facebook page titled ‘Shropshire Motorcycle Road Safety’ and will soon have a website. We are sponsored in our activities by Confused.com, Benham BMW Motorrad, Extreme Medics.com, Minshall Construction Ltd and Tyreworks both Market Drayton businesses.

I’m a keen biker myself, although currently without a bike!! Something that is to be rectified this year. My aim is to encourage safer riding through engagement with bikers and giving them the facts to enable them to make an informed decision as to whether to train further, explaining the benefits. The overall aim is to make biking safe for everyone.

The purpose of this e mail is to ask whether your club wants to be represented at the first ever show we are staging at Shrewsbury Town FC on Sunday 26th June 2011 between 10am and 4pm. We want to showcase all things biking in Shropshire including clubs. There will be assessment rides on offer, a go at riding a scooter for those new to the pastime, chances to get on training courses, displays of bikes from Shrewsbury Honda, Benham BMW, and other dealers. The list is still being confirmed. We’ll also have entertainment from a live band, local radio, RAF helicopter, bouncy castle and slides, traders, bike kit and in fact, a load of other stuff. We’re still pulling it together.

Entry is free for all. There will be a free bike park on site, and it’ll be free to you to set up a stand, maybe bring some of your members bikes along to display. I’m also after traders, entertainment and anything that can fill the show. If you feel you can help, please contact me on the e mail and number below.

Thanks , anything you could assist with, would be a great help.

  2. I’ve been looking at your calendar and note that you have Johnny Brittain coming to give a talk. Iv’ve come to know John well over thelast 3 years.
You have him as Johnny Britton. He might be offended with wrong spelling of his name.

  3. Dear Derek,
I am not a member, My Honda 400/4 and Gilera Arcore date from the seventies, a little late! I live very near The Ragleth, my local, and I am just writing since I went to the Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum a couple of weeks ago, and I wanted to let you know how wonderful it is! There are many vintage bikes, and many later ones, including the Kneeler Norton, and some factory protoypes. Too much to mention, really! It really is worth going. I wonder if you might like to think about organising a coach trip for your members? I cannot tell you how many fascinating bikes Sammy has. His collection really rivals the National Motorcycle Museum. If you haven’t been I do implore you to spread the word, it would be a wonderful experience. I can’t wait to go again!!!
    Best regards,
    Les Curtis

    • Totally agree. I thought I’d seen bikes of all shapes and sizes, but the variety is amazing. A 3 cylinder radial engined bike? There is there. Thoroughly recommend it.

  4. Hi Derek.
